Payment Notes
- Alipay/WeChat Pay are universal in Chengdu.
- Credit cards: Limited to international hotels and some brand stores.
- Cash: Good idea for neighborhood food stalls, tea houses, and small vendors.
- Tea houses are a Chengdu institution — sit down for a few hours, play cards (mahjong!) and drink tea. 30–50 RMB/person.
Packing Tips
- All seasons: Comfortable shoes for city walking. Light rain jacket.
- Summer: Sunscreen, mosquito repellent (humidity = mosquitoes), light breathable clothing.
- Winter: Damp cold feels colder than it is. Dress in layers.
- Camera: Pandas! Bring a good zoom lens. Pandas move slowly so shutter speed isn’t critical.
- Power adapter: Same as rest of China — Type A/C/I, 220V.
Local Etiquette & Food Tips
- Spicy food is everywhere. If you can’t handle spice, say “Bú yào là” (不要辣 = “no spicy please”). Most restaurants can adjust, but Sichuan cuisine defaults to spicy.
- Hot pot (huǒguō): Chengdu is famous for it. Communal dining, you cook raw food in a spicy broth at your table. Try it!
- Tea houses: Take off shoes before sitting on cushions in traditional tea houses. Order tea by the cup. Stay as long as you want.
- Panda etiquette: No loud talking or sudden movements near pandas. No flash photography. Keep a respectful distance.
- Mosquitoes: Damp climate means lots of mosquitoes. Bug spray is essential.
Don’t Miss
- Wenshu Monastery: Active Buddhist temple in downtown. Beautiful, peaceful, not touristy.
- Jinli Street: Restored old street with Sichuan snacks, crafts, and architecture. Touristy but fun.
- Du Fu Thatched Cottage: Museum honoring the great Tang Dynasty poet. Quiet and cultural.
- Leshan Giant Buddha: 1.5 hr drive from Chengdu. 71 m tall Buddha carved into cliffside. Day trip worth it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I hold a baby panda?
No. Chengdu Research Base does not allow holding or touching pandas. (Some other less reputable centers still do — we don’t recommend them for animal welfare reasons.)
Is Chengdu safe?
Very safe for foreign travelers. Less petty crime than Beijing or Shanghai. Normal precautions apply.
What about the altitude?
Chengdu is at 500 m — no altitude issues. But nearby Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong scenic areas are at 2,000–4,000 m — altitude sickness possible.
